U.S. steel mills shipped 8,791,000 net tons in January 2005 according to the latest data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). This total represents a 3.2% decrease from the 9,082,000 net tons shipped in January 2004, and a 4.1% increase from the 8,447,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, December 2004.

A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:

• Service centers and distributors, –1.7%
• Automotive, +5.5%
• Construction and contractors’ products, –12.7%
• Oil and gas, +22.7%
• Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, +2.4%
• Appliances, utensils and cutlery, –6.5%
• Containers, packaging and shipping materials, –9.3%
• Electrical equipment, +0.4%
