January Steel Shipments Slightly Ahead of January 2005

April 7, 2006 — U.S. steel mills shipped 8,918,000 net tons in January 2006, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
Total January shipments reflect a 1.4% increase from the 8,791,000 net tons shipped in January 2005, and a 4.8% increase from the 8,513,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, December 2005.
Significant changes for (compared to January 2005 shipments) include:
- Service centers and distributors, –6.1%
- Automotive, +15.3%
- Construction and contractors’ products, +30.4%
- Oil and gas, +6.9%
- Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, +7.4%
- Appliances, utensils and cutlery, – 3.4%
- Containers, packaging and shipping materials, +3.1%
- Electrical equipment, –4.0%.
