IISI Reports World Steel Production for June 2008
07/22/2008 - Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting stood at an estimated 118.8 million tonnes in June 2008 — 5.9% higher than for the same month of 2007, but 1.0% lower than the previous month, May 2008.

Excluding China, world production grew by just 3.3% in June compared to June 2007, and fell by 2.9% compared to the previous month (May 2008).

For the first six months of 2008, total world crude steel production reached 696.1 million tonnes, a 5.7% increase over the first six months of 2007. Of that 696.1-million-tonne six-month total, China produced 263.2 million tonnes of crude steel (37.8% of the six-month total), its total reflecting an increase of 9.6% compared to the same period in 2007.
Weighing in at 57.5% of total world production for June 2008, production in Asia stood at 68.3 million tonnes in June, 8.7% higher than in June 2007. Representing 39.5% of world production for June, Chinese production was reported at 46.9 million tonnes in June, a 10.2% increase compared to June 2007, and a 2.0% increase compared to the previous month (May 2008).
The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 18.1 million tonnes of crude steel in June, up slightly (+1.8%) from June 2007. Comparing June 2008 to June 2007, crude steel production increased by 34.3% in Belgium and 11.4% in France, but fell by 24.1% in Bulgaria andby 9.6% in Sweden. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 15.3% of the total reported world production in June 2008.
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.9 million tonnes in June, an increase of 15.5% compared to June 2007. Macedoniashowed the largest increase (+25.7%), followed by Turkey (+17.5%), while production fell by 15.4% in Norway. Altogether, these countries contributed 2.5% of the total reported world production in June 2008.
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 10.5 million tonnes in June, reflecting a 1.1% increase compared to June 2007. The Ukraine reported the largest increase (+6.2%) and Kazakhstan reported the largest decrease (–12.1%) over the period. Altogether, these countries contributed 8.8% of the total reported world production in June 2008.
North American production totaled 11.2 million tonnes in June, virtually unchanged (+0.4%) compared to June 2007. Comparing June 2008 to June 2007, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Cuba (+38.1%) and Mexico (+8.5%), while production fell by 0.7% in the U.S., by 15.5% in El Salvador, and by 14.7% in Trinidad and Tobago. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 9.4% of the total reported world production in June 2008.
South American production for June 2008 totaled 4.1 million tonnes, a 5.1% increase compared to June 2007. The largest percentage increases took effect in Peru (+109.7%) and Uruguay (+19.4%), while Columbia (-30.6%) and Paraguay (18.6%) logged the greatest percentage decreases. Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.5% of the total reported world production in June 2008.
Production in Africa totaled 1.4 million tonnes in June 2008, a 1.8% decrease compared to June 2007. Comparing June 2008 to June 2007, small increases were reported by Egypt (+3.3%), South Africa (+2.4%), and Morocco (+2.0%), while production fell most significantly in Algeria (–40.8%) over the same period. The African countries contributed 1.3% of the total reported world production in June 2008.
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.4 million tonnes in June 2008, a 5.5% increase compared to June 2007. Comparing June 2008 to June 2007, production increased by 22.3% in Qatar and by 12.1% in Saudi Arabia. Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.2% of the total reported world production in June 2008.
Production in Oceania totaled 0.75 million tonnes in June, an 8.7% decrease compared to June 2007. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.6% of the total reported world production in June 2008.
