Horsehead Starts Up Second Kiln in Tennessee
01/03/2008 - Horsehead starts up a second Waelz kiln for recycling EAF dust at its Rockwood, Tenn., location.
Horsehead Holding Corp.’s wholly owned subsidiary, Horsehead Corp., has started up a second Waelz kiln at its Rockwood, Tenn., location.
The new Waelz kiln will be used to recycle EAF dust using Horsehead's proprietary technology. Zinc units from this new kiln will feed Horsehead's smelting operation in its Monaca, Pa., facility, which in turn will produce more zinc products. The addition of the new kiln will also create 10 additional jobs.
"We are excited about this expansion, which will allow us to grow our EAF dust recycling business by 15% by increasing our service to the growing minimill steel industry," said Jim Hensler, Horsehead's President and CEO.
Horsehead broke ground at the Rockwood facility in December 2006 with expectations to be operational by the end of 2007. The new kiln will double the current EAF dust processing capacity at that location.
Horsehead Holding Corp. is a leading U.S. producer of specialty zinc and zinc-based products, and is among the world's largest recyclers of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust and other zinc-bearing materials. Headquartered in Monaca, Pa., Horsehead employs over 1,000 people and operates six facilities throughout the U.S.
