Hatch Project Selected as PMI’s 2008 Project of the Year
10/22/2008 - The Project Management Institute awards Hatch its Project of the Year Award for its work to expand Quebec Iron and Titanium's Upgraded Slag plant in Sorel-Tracy, Que., Canada.
Hatch Ltd. has been awarded the Project Management Institute (PMI) Project of the Year Award for its expansion of Quebec Iron and Titanium's (QIT’s) Upgraded Slag plant in Sorel-Tracy, Que., Canada.
QIT's metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracy is a unique operation, with nine furnaces feeding several interconnected production lines. Smelted ore is either transformed into titanium dioxide and iron or transported to plants for further processing. Resulting products are used as raw materials by pigment producers, metal-casting, and the automotive industry.
QIT commissioned Hatch to add an additional production line to the Acid Leaching Plant and the Slag Preparation Plant in order to meet growing demand. Hatch was responsible for consulting, engineering, developing information systems, and project and construction management. The expansion raised QIT’s Upgraded Slag Plant production capacity to more than 375 tonnes/year, a 15% increase. The project was the continuation of a QIT investment program of several hundred million dollars that was designed to reduce cost and improve quality.
PMI’s Project of the Year Award recognizes the accomplishments of a project and team for exemplary performance and project management. It is the world's most prestigious project management award.
Hatch's project, which was completed eight months ahead of schedule with savings of CA$15 million, was selected from a multitude of successfully completed projects from around the world.
"Through excellent execution, Hatch turned eight months of project time into eight months of QIT revenue-building production time," said Gregory Balestrero, President and CEO of PMI.
