Electrostal Expands Product Portfolio with Press Supplied by SMS Meer

The Russian company Electrostal, based in Elektrostal near Moscow, has successfully commissioned a new quick-acting forging press supplied by SMS Meer. The new machine is the first of its kind to be installed in Russia. It is particularly fast and precise, allowing Electrostal to produce a wide range of products including high-strength alloys.

With a press force of 16 MN the new machine produces forgings for special applications to high quality standards, for example in the aerospace industry or energy sector.

In the past Electrostal manufactured these products on a variety of machines, resulting in high production costs.

"Our cooperation with SMS Meer was based on a very close and trusting working partnership. The range of applications of the new press is varied. We are therefore able to expand our product portfolio considerably," said Evgeny Shilnikov, General Director of Electrostal.

The press features a high level of automation and can process up to ten workpieces an hour. At the same time it uses very little energy, thereby cutting production costs. Mr. Shilnikov added, "We have already taken two steps forward with this plant. Our production is now both energy and cost-efficient. This means we are in an ideal position to benefit from the current revival of the Russian market."

Electrostal is to continue with the modernization of its forging plant near Moscow in the coming months: In Autumn 2013 the company is to commission a new radial forging machine which was also supplied by SMS Meer.
