Eisenwerk Sulzau-Werfen Acquires Miller Centrifugal Casting

Austria-based Eisenwerk Sulzau-Werfen (ESW) has purchased Miller Centrifugal Casting Co., based in Cecil, Pa. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

“This acquisition reflects a strategic growth initiative enabling ESW and its wholly-owned subsidiary, MCC, to pursue new and emerging global market opportunities in the metals sector,” said Miller Centrifugal President Ian Sadler. “The combination of their technological strengths, R&D capabilities and dominant market positions yields superior capacity for expansion and long-term sustainability. Additional capital investment by ESW is anticipated at MCC, as well as the creation of new jobs in the future.”

As North America’s dominant producer of the steel mill sleeves used in the production of long products, Miller Centrifugal will add significantly to ESW’s market position and product portfolio. A leading producer of high quality, vertically cast centrifugal castings, Miller Centrifugal is also North America’s number-one producer of large gear blanks, which are typically used in the power generation, metal, mining and construction equipment markets.

Miller Centrifugal will continue to operate under its current name, and the company reports there are no plans to eliminate any jobs at the Cecil-based facility, which employs 47.

Originally founded in 1770, ESW is a leading producer of high quality rolls for the steel industry (hot rolling mills for flat rolled products) and currently exports to more than 50 countries. Headquartered in Tenneck, Austria, ESW is a privately-held, ISO 9001 certified iron foundry with a longstanding reputation for product quality. The company currently exports rolls worldwide and is dedicated to environmental and advanced R&D technologies, state-of-the-art manufacturing methods, continuous quality improvement and production-process control.

Founded in 1958, Miller Centrifugal Casting is a leading producer of high quality, vertically cast centrifugal castings. Formerly owned by founder William H. Miller and later, Acutus Gladwin Industries (AGI) of Coraopolis, Pa., the company was purchased in 2002 by MCC Holdings Co, LLC, which is owned by Birchmere Capital, LP of Wexford, Pa., and Wilder-Deem of New York, New York.  With estimated revenues of nearly $21 million in 2008 (up from $8 million in 2003), the company maintains both a lean manufacturing facility and a productive, motivated workforce that has benefited from a gain-sharing program launched in 2005.

The company also has unique manufacturing capabilities including a process for casting bi-metallic structural sleeves and a near-net shape casting process that allow it to cast and machine complex, irregular shapes, as well as concentric shapes in sizes, diameters and weights unmatched in the marketplace.
