Dongkuk Steel Grants Final Acceptance Certificate to Siemens for New Plate Mill

Dongkuk Steel Mill Co. Ltd. recently awarded the Final Acceptance Certificate to Siemens for the new 5-meter-Plate Mill No. 3 at the company’s Dangjin works.

The new plate mill is capable of producing high-quality plate with thicknesses down to 5 millimeters for applications in the shipbuilding and construction industries. Siemens were responsible for the complete engineering of all mechanical equipment and full supply of the automation equipment.

The Dongkuk plate mill comprises a 4-high stand equipped with long stroke hydraulic automatic gauge control capable of producing 11,000 tonnes of rolling force, work-roll shifting functions based on SmartCrown technology and heavy bending, as well as a Mulpic® intensive plate cooling section, a hot leveler, and three cooling beds. The Mulpic accelerated plate cooling technology is specifically designed to produce very high strength plates with good weldability and low alloy content. A shearing line — incorporating crop shear, double side trim shear, slitting shear and divide shear — was also part of Siemens’ scope of supply.

Siemens also supplied the entire automation system, which comprised basic automation, including the technological control systems, as well as operation and visualization equipment and process automation functions. Due to the close interaction of analytical process models and technological closed-loop control systems, all the process parameters are kept within close tolerance limits. The Siemens solution also incorporated such functions as plan view pattern control and thermo-mechanical rolling.

A rolling-sequence control system enables nested multi-plate rolling, which will help to enhance the plant’s productivity. This flexible system can accommodate changes in the range of products or quality requirements, thus safeguarding the original investment. A higher-level material-tracking system ensures smooth flow of material and correct correlation of plates and process data at all times. All components and systems are part of Siroll PM, Siemens’ integrated solution for plate mills.

Siemens was also responsible for commissioning and customer training.

The new mill’s scheduled production capacity will be 1.5 million tonnes per annum, increasing Dongkuk’s total production capacity of plates for shipbuilding, pipe making and construction to 4 million tonnes per annum. At the new plant, it will be possible to roll plate with thicknesses of between 5 and 150 millimeters and widths from 900 to 4900 millimeters.

Dongkuk, a leading Korean steel producer, has collaborated with Siemens on a series of past projects, including Siemens’ modernization and expansion of Dongkuk’s plate production facilities.
