U.S. steel mills shipped 8,545,000 net tons during April 2005 according to the latest data reported by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). April shipments represent a 6.5% decrease from the 9,143,000 net tons shipped in April 2004, and a 7.6% decrease from the 9,249,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, March 2005.

A year-to-year comparison of year to date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:

• Service centers and distributors, –1.3%.
• Automotive, –2.7%.
• Construction and contractors’ products, –0.2%.
• Oil and gas, +8.7%.
• Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, –3.7%.
• Appliances, utensils and cutlery, –1.5%.
• Containers, packaging and shipping materials, –14.3%.
• Electrical equipment, –5.7%.
