Dofasco Signs Technology Agreement with JFE Steel

Dofasco Inc. has signed a Technology Cooperation Agreement for automotive steels with JFE Steel Corp. of Japan.

A History of Cooperation

In 2003, JFE and Dofasco entered into a long-term lease arrangement enabling Dofasco to utilize JFE's 50% production capacity at DJ Galvanizing.

Built in 1993, DJ Galvanizing is a 50/50 joint venture between Dofasco and JFE. It operates a single, hot-dip galvanizing line that supplies high value added galvanized steel for automotive applications, as well as a recoil line. The facility has a design capacity of 400,000 tons per year.

Today, Dofasco offers 400,000 tons of high value added automotive galvanized products to its North American customers from the facility.

JFE will provide Dofasco with the product and process technology support to produce advanced automotive steels at DJ Galvanizing in Windsor, Ont. Dofasco and JFE are joint venture partners at DJ Galvanizing.

A prior Technology Cooperation Agreement, signed in 1989 between Dofasco and NKK (a predecessor of JFE), expired earlier this year.

"This agreement is a renewal of our commitment to the partnership and to our customers," said Don Pether, President and CEO of Dofasco Inc. "DJ Galvanizing is a state-of-the-art facility that produces advanced automotive steel, and through this agreement, JFE will support Dofasco in providing advanced product and process technologies to ensure our customers continue to receive the highest quality products."
