Aug. 23, 2006 — U.S. steel mills shipped 9,739,000 net tons in June 2006, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Total shipments reflect a 2.0% decrease from the 9,895,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, May 2006, and an 18.3% increase from the 8,229,000 net tons shipped in June 2005.

A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:

• Service centers and distributors, +3.4%
• Automotive, +16.8%
• Construction and contractors’ products, +16.9%
• Oil and gas, +9.1%
• Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, +11.7%
• Appliances, utensils and cutlery, –3.5%
• Containers, packaging and shipping materials, +5.3%
• Electrical equipment, +20.6%
