Danieli and Kocks to Upgrade Seversky Seamless Tube Mill

The Russian pipe producer TMK-Group has placed an order with the Danieli Group, Italy, to modernize the seamless tube mill at their subsidiary Seversky Truboprokatny Zavod [STZ].

Danieli Centro Tube [DCT], serving as the main contractor, will modernize and convert STZ’s Pilger mill into a continuous 14-inch seamless tube mill with an annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes. As part of the upgrade, DCT will install a 5-stand FQM™ retained mandrel mill, a 3-stand extracting mill, and a new 14-stand sizing mill that will replace two existing Pilger mills and two subsequent sizing mills. Nearly all of the downstream machinery will be replaced as well.

Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co KG, Germany, will again be responsible for the process, design, supply, and commissioning of the 3-stand extractor and the 14-stand sizing mill, according to the cooperation agreement between the company and DCT. Both mills will be equipped with the innovative “Star Drive,” which features individual drives for every roll. The 3-roll stands are designed for a nominal roll diameter of 650 mm.

Although the extractor operates with non-adjustable stands only, the sizing mill will utilize both non-adjustable and adjustable stand types. The mill will feature a quick stand-changing system, as well as in-line remote controlled pass adjustment for the adjustable stands, and a quick roll-changing system in the roll shop.

After the conversion, the new mill will produce seamless tubes with diameters ranging from 168 to 365 mm outer diameter and wall thicknesses of 6.28 to 37.3 mm. According to Kocks, tolerances and material characteristics will satisfy the international standards required by the gas and oil industry.

The new mill is scheduled for start-up in 2010.
