AK Steel Announces Retirement of Alan McCoy
01/24/2012 - AK Steel announces the retirement of Alan H. McCoy, Vice President, Government and Public Relations, effective January 31, 2012.
AK Steel announced that Alan H. McCoy, Vice President, Government and Public Relations, has elected to retire effective January 31, 2012.
"Following a distinguished career spanning 35 years with AK Steel and its predecessor company, I want to thank Alan for his significant contributions to our company's public relations, government affairs, and community relations activities over the years," said James L. Wainscott, Chairman, President and CEO of AK Steel. "Alan is a true professional and his leadership and ability to convey our company's message to these key constituent groups has helped to shape AK Steel into the world-class company it is today."
The company also announced that effective with McCoy’s retirement, the company's contact for news media relations and government relations will be Barry L. Racey, Director, Government and Public Relations.
McCoy began his steel career in 1976 in employee and community relations for the former Kansas City Works of Armco Inc. He progressed through several positions before joining Armco's former Eastern Steel Division in Middletown, Ohio, in 1987. He held several public relations positions with Armco Steel Co. L.P., the successor company to the Eastern Steel Division, before being named General Manager, Public Relations for AK Steel Corp. in 1994. He was named Vice President, Public Affairs for AK Steel in 1997 and Vice President, Government and Public Relations in 2004.
McCoy is currently a director of the Ohio Steel Council and also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Ursuline Academy of Cincinnati. He is a past chair of the Council of U.S. Producers of the American Iron and Steel Institute, Washington, D.C., and has been honored by the Ohio Manufacturers' Association with the Babington award for his public policy work. He is a past recipient of a Bronze Telly award as writer and executive producer of the corporate film Making AK Steel. Mr. McCoy is a graduate of the University of Kansas.
AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steels, primarily for automotive, infrastructure and manufacturing, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets. The company employs about 6200 men and women in Middletown, Mansfield, Coshocton and Zanesville, Ohio; Butler, Pa.; Ashland, Ky.; Rockport, Ind.; and its corporate headquarters in West Chester, Ohio.
AK Tube LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AK Steel, employs about 300 men and women in plants in Walbridge, Ohio, and Columbus, Ind. AK Tube produces carbon and stainless electric resistance welded (ERW) tubular steel products for truck, automotive and other markets.
AK Coal Resources, Inc., another wholly-owned subsidiary of AK Steel, owns or leases metallurgical coal reserves in Somerset County, Pa. AK Steel also owns 49.9% of Magnetation LLC, a joint venture headquartered in Grand Rapids, Minn., that produces iron ore concentrate from previously mined ore reserves.
