AIST Presents Awards at MS&T’10 Conference
10/20/2010 - AIST presented the Richard J. Fruehan Award, Gilbert R. Speich Award, Jerry Silver Award, and the inaugural Adolf Martens Memorial Steel Lecturer award at the Steel Properties & Applications Conference held in conjunction with the Materials Sciences & Technology 2010 annual conference in Houston, Tex., on Oct. 17-21.
AIST presented the Richard J. Fruehan Award, Gilbert R. Speich Award, Jerry Silver Award, and the inaugural Adolf Martens Memorial Steel Lecturer award at the Steel Properties & Applications Conference held in conjunction with the Materials Sciences & Technology 2010 annual conference in Houston, Tex., on Oct. 17-21.
The Richard J. Fruehan Award was established in 2005 to honor Dr. Richard J. Fruehan, a devoted teacher and outstanding scientist for his dedication to his students, the association, and the steel industry. The award is presented to the author of a process metallurgy technical paper judged to be the best of class by the AIST Metallurgy — Processing, Products and Applications Technology Committee.
The 2010 Richard J. Fruehan Award recipients are Eugene B. Pretorius and Helmut G. Oltmann from Nucor Steel–Berkeley and Thomas R. Cash from Nucor Steel–Arkansas for their paper, “The Effective Modification of Spinel Inclusions by Ca-Treatment in LCAK Steel.”
The Gilbert R. Speich Award was established in 1992 to honor Gilbert R. Speich for his contributions to the field of ferrous physical metallurgy. The award is presented to the author of a physical metallurgy technical paper judged to be the best of class by the AIST Metallurgy — Processing, Products and Applications Technology Committee.
The 2010 Gilbert R. Speich Award recipients are Dan G. Edelman and Peter C. Campbell from Nucor Steel–Indiana; Chris R. Killmore, Harold R. Kaul, and James G. Williams from BlueScope Steel Ltd.; Kristin R. Carpenter from the University of Wollongong; and Walter N. Blejde from Castrip LLC for their paper, “Recent Developments With Ultra-Thin Cast Strip Products Produced by the CASTRIP® Process.”
The Jerry Silver Award was established in 1991 to honor Jerry Silver for his leadership in the development of student affairs and programs. The award is presented to the author of a process metallurgy or product applications technical paper judged to be the best of class by the AIST Metallurgy — Processing, Products and Applications Technology Committee. One of the authors must be a student.
The 2010 Jerry Silver Award recipients are Jianwei Gao from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Mujun Long, Yufeng Wang, Lifeng Zhang, and Xiangjun Zuo from Missouri University of Science & Technology for their paper, “Inclusions and Nozzle Clogging During Billet Continuous Casting Process.”
The AIST Adolf Martens Memorial Steel Lecture was established in 2010 to honor Adolf Martens, a pioneer in establishing structure-property relationships in steel and one of the first researchers to utilize optical microscopy to observe that hard steels have different features than soft steels at the microscale. The award recognizes significant technical accomplishments or a lifetime of notable contributions in ferrous physical metallurgy processing and product applications. The recipient is invited to present an honorary lecture on a subject of particular interest to the association during the AIST Steel Properties & Applications Conference.
The 2010 recipient of the Adolf Martens Lecture is Dr. George Krauss. Among his many citations and awards, Dr. Krauss has published more than 300 papers, authored publications, and has edited numerous conference volumes on topics such as steel tempering, carburizing, zinc-based coatings on steel, and microalloyed forging steels. He was also instrumental in establishing the Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center at the Colorado School of Mines, an NSF Industry-University cooperative research center.
The recipients of the AIST Association-Level Awards, AIST Member Chapter Awards, and AIME Awards will be announced at the President’s Award Breakfast during AISTech 2011 — The Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition on May 3, 2011, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
