AISI Honors Andrew Sharkey with 2008 Gary Memorial Medal
05/07/2008 - The American Iron and Steel Institute awards Andrew G. Sharkey III as the 2008 recipient of the Institute’s Gary Memorial Medal.
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced Andrew G. Sharkey III as the 2008 recipient of the Institute’s Gary Memorial Medal.
Established in 1927, the Gary Medal is named for Judge Elbert H. Gary, the first president of AISI.
The medal recognizes an individual for his or her remarkable lifelong contributions to the North American steel industry.
The medal’s inscription reads:
“In recognition of his outstanding contribution in steering the AISI through unprecedented changes within our industry and its economic and political environment;
His tenacious commitment to maintaining an effective voice for the industry through the most severe financial challenges in its history;
His significant contributions to the policy-related initiatives that facilitated the industry’s recovery;
and His masterful coordination of valuable AISI initiatives through major changes in the ownership and structure of the North American steel industry.”

In presenting the award, 2008-09 AISI Chairman Keith E. Busse, who is Chairman and CEO of Steel Dynamics, Inc., praised Sharkey for “leading the industry through challenging times, which were followed by a period of tremendous revitalization that produced a vibrant and sustainable North American steel industry.”
“The leaders of AISI’s member companies greatly appreciate Andy’s years of service,” continued Busse. “He has spoken out on Capitol Hill, to the media, and before customer groups on the importance of having a strong and healthy steel industry, which is so vital to our nation’s economic and national security. He has been a highly effective CEO for the Institute, providing added value for the members of AISI.”

Since joining AISI in 1993, Sharkey has focused the Institute on its mission to promote steel as the material of choice and to enhance the competitiveness of its members and the North American steel industry.
Prior to AISI, Sharkey served for twelve years as the president of the Cleveland-based Steel Service Center Institute (SSCI), representing the North American steel service center industry. He is a member of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Council of Manufacturing Associations, the U.S. Chamber Committee of 100 and the Key Industries Association Committee (KIAC) of the American Society of Association Executives. He also serves as a Director of the Reliance Steel and Aluminum Co.
A native of Pittsburgh, Sharkey received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Yale University in 1968 and a Master of Arts degree from Duquesne University in 1970.
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 31 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 130 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
