U.S. steel mills shipped 9,316,000 net tons in August 2004, according to the latest data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). August shipments represent an 8.0% increase from the 8,629,000 net tons shipped in August 2003, and a 0.5% decrease from the 9,361,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, July 2004.

For the first eight months of 2004, steel shipments were 76,237,000 net tons, representing a 9.5% increase from the 69,595,000 net tons shipped during the same period in 2003.

A year-to-year comparison of shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:

• Service centers and distributors, +5.8%.
• Automotive, +7.3%.
• Construction and contractors’ products, +9.8%.
• Oil and gas, +11.2%.
• Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, +20.1%.
• Appliances, utensils and cutlery, +5.1%.
• Containers, packaging and shipping materials, –0.8%.
• Electrical equipment, –4.9%.
