Christian Fröhling pursued his studies at the Rhineland-Westphalia Technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen) from 1996 to 2000, where he graduated as an engineer in metallurgy and materials engineering. Following his graduation, he served as a research associate at the Institute of Metallurgy and pursued his doctoral studies. In 2004, he earned his doctorate focusing on energy savings in ironmaking. Since 2004, Fröhling has been associated with the SMS group. He initially worked in corporate development and served as the personal assistant to SMS group chairman and chief executive officer Heinrich Weiss. In 2007, Fröhling was appointed head of the newly established specialist department, Energy and Environmental Technologies, at SMS Siemag AG, which has seen continuous growth under his leadership. In 2012, he expanded his responsibilities to include sales of the submerged-arc furnace (SAF) business. By 2016, he had advanced to the position of vice president of the continuous casting department. Since July 2018, Fröhling has been serving as SMS group’s executive vice president of the Center of Excellence Metallurgy.
