Essar Steel Algoma Workers Support Tentative Agreement

Essar Steel Algoma Inc. announced Wednesday that USW Local 2251 had voted overwhelmingly in support of the tentative agreement reached on July 21, 2010.
“This collective agreement is fair to our employees while recognizing the realities of the steel market,” said the company in a statement. “The early and overwhelming ratification allows the company to provide our customers and the community with the confidence that we will be able to continue to operate and provide steel to our valued customers.”
Negotiations are reported to be ongoing with USW Local 2724, which represents salaried workers, including front line supervisors. The current agreements for those represented by both Local 2724 and Local 2251 have contract deadlines of July 31.
A member of the Essar Group, Essar Steel Algoma Inc. is based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. As a fully integrated steel producer, the company derives its revenues primarily from the manufacture and sale of hot and cold rolled steel products including sheet and plate.
