Danieli to Revamp Dunaferr Roughing Mill

Dunaferr, Hungary, and Danieli Wean United recently signed a contract for the turnkey supply of a new reversing roughing mill, attached edger, descaling system, and hot coilbox automation to be located at Dunaferr’s facility in Dunaujvaros, Hungary.

For the roughing mill area, Danieli will supply the new mechanical and hydraulic equipment, as well as the related electricals and L1/L2 automation and process control system. The new arrangement includes an entry roller table and hydraulic side guides at the roughing mill; work roll and backup roll quick-changing equipment; exit roller table and hydraulic side guides at the roughing mill.

The new roughing mill and attached edger will replace the existing roughing mill. The fully hydraulic vertical edger equipped with automatic width control (HAWC) and the reversing roughing mill equipped with electromechanical screwdown and hydraulic automatic gauge control (HAGC) will guarantee high performances in dimensional tolerances of the transfer bar.

In order to increase the coil surface quality, a new descaling system, working at high pressure (235 bar), will be installed for the new descaling box at reheating furnace exit, the on board roughing mill descaler and the revamped descaler at entry side of finishing mill.

The main targets for the revamp include increasing annual mill production, increasing coil weight up to 32 tonnes, and improvement of final product quality. Following the upgrade, the plant will produce 3.5 tonnes/year of low and medium carbon steel, unalloyed structural steel, air corrosion structural steel, base material for pipes (up to API X80), fine-grain steel, temper grade and spring steel, high endurance steel, and electrical steel.
