Karsten Pinkwart is a professor of electrochemical energy storage and converters and vice dean of faculty for electrical engineering and information technology at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA) and deputy product area director for applied electrochemistry at the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT). He studied at the University of Jena and the University of Karlsruhe ‘Fridericiana’ (TH) (now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology [KIT]). In 1999, he wrote his doctoral thesis on lithium-ion batteries at Witten/Herdecke University. From 1996 to 2002, he was a researcher and project manager at the Fraunhofer ICT, where he led a variety of national and international research, consulting and industry-related projects. Pinkwart assumed the title of deputy director of applied electrochemistry in 2003, where his work includes a broad spectrum of research and development activities in the fields of electrochemical energy storage and conversion, electrochemical sensor technology and analytics as well as electrochemical synthesis. The notable focuses of his research are electrocatalysis, storage, application and safety technology for specific applications of hydrogen. He has co-authored numerous books and articles in scientific journals. On a national and international level, he has provided expertise for various scientific journals, organizations, ministries and research institutes. Pinkwart has also been working at the Helmut Schmidt University of the German Federal Army for many years and works on various NATO and European Defence Agency committees concerned with sustainable energy. Furthermore, he is a member of the management board of the German Working Committee of Electrochemical Research Institutions and of the German Chemical Society’s Chemistry and Energy specialist group. Pinkwart is also active in the German Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology’s PROCESSNET Electrochemical Processes working committee. In July 2020, he was appointed to the German government’s National Hydrogen Council and has served in this role ever since. In addition, he was appointed to the advisory board of the Hydrogen RoadMap Baden-Württemberg in December 2021.
