Boris Kohnen
Head of Sustainable Steel Production, Competence Center Metallurgy
thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG Dr. Boris Kohnen obtained a Ph.D. in mechanical process engineering from the Technical University Dortmund in 2007. Prior to that, he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering in 2001. He started his professional career in 2008 as a research associate at the university before he joined the R&D department at HKM in 2011, where he specialized in offgas cleaning technology. In 2015, he became team leader for the mechanical process technology in the company. In 2020, he was promoted to general manager for blast furnace operation at HKM. In 2023, he changed companies and became team coordinator for sustainability in steelmaking at thyssenkrupp Steel Europe in Duisburg, Germany. Kohnen has 17 years of professional experience working in iron- and steelmaking facilities and is due to his recent position deeply involved in the transformation activities of tkSE toward a low-carbon-emission steel-producing technology. The main focus of his work today is the further development of the new technology linked to the transformation of the steel industry. His team consists of 30 different specialists from different technical areas, all of whom work on the topic of decarbonization.
